Tuesday, October 24, 2017: Using Descriptive Language

Goal: Incorporate descriptive language in writing to create sensory details and imagery.

Since I am absent today, you have the whole class period to finish Using Descriptive Language at Flocabulary.com. Whatever you don’t finish today is homework.

Find today’s assignment: 

  • Go to Flocabulary.com
  • Press Log in
  • Choose Google
  • Sign in with school Google account
  • Select Using Descriptive Langauge

There are four activities to complete:

  1. Watch
  2. Vocab
  3. Read and Respond
  4. Quiz

If you finish early—

  • Add descriptive language to your narrative.
  • Choose an idea from “What to Do When You Are Done.” (right sidebar)

Reading & Writing Workshop

Goals: Read and keep track of progress. Practice editing dialogue, and show what you learned on the first quiz. Reflect on what you learned this week in your English Journal.

Announcements:

  • If your Story Structure Doc is not complete, please finish it and Request a Regrade. This is an assessment grade.
  •  The quarter ends in one week. Keep track of the pages you’ve read because you need that for your final reading assessment.
  • When you finish a Google Doc assignment, always make sure it is in your English 7  Folder and shared with amcmillan@sbunified.org. Otherwise I can’t see it!

2) Polish your storyboard:

  • Proofread the captions. Add capitals and periods.
  • Add at least two transitions (for anchor chart click HERE).
  • Make sure you have added details to the whole square. Show the setting (time and place).

3) Photograph your storyboard and upload it to your English folder in Google Drive.

Storyboard It

Goal: Visualize your story spine with a storyboard. Practice dialogue quotes and colon quotes in order to include them in your narratives.

Announcements:

  • Meet in the Library Tomorrow: Bring your book / ID card.
  • If you were absent yesterday, read yesterday’s blog. Complete Story Structure Ex. 1 and 2.
  • REMINDER: Do not turn in to Google Classroom. Just make sure the Doc in in your English 7 folder.

Writer’s Workshop

1) Visualize Your Narrative with a Storyboard.

Open your Story Structure Doc in Google Drive. Scroll to your final story spine with the theme (Ex. 2., Part C).

2) No Red Ink Assignment #2: Dialogue Quotes and Flow Quotes

  • Log in to noredink.com. Make sure you log in with Google.
  • Press the Home tab to see your assignments. If you have late assignments, complete them first (see below).
  • If you finish early, press Practice to work on mastery of another topic.

We Are All Story Tellers: Adding Sensory Details

 

Goal: Revise the memory you wrote Monday in order to include sensory details (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste), dialogue, and exact thoughts.

1) Agenda

Click HERE to open this week’s assignments. Record the changes in your agenda.

2) Announcements

  • Please use Drive to access your assignments. TURN IN to Google Classroom.
  • Absent Monday or Tuesday? Find We Are All Storytellers in Google Classroom. Complete Exercise 1.
  • Forgot Your iPad? Date the entry in your R/W Notebook and write everything we do in the notebook. Otherwise you earn 0 points!
  • Back to School Night Tomorrow: Give your schedule to your parents.

3) REVISEWe Are All Storytellers (L. 1, Ex. 1)

  • Open We Are All Storytellers in Google Drive.
  • Scroll to Part C.
  • Revise what you wrote on Monday. Help your reader visualize what happened.
  • Make Sure your Doc is inside your English folder so Ms. McMillan can see your progress.

OPTIONAL: Paste your revised writing from Storytellers L. 1 Ex. 2 (Part C) for Weekly Pages 3.

  • Copy (Command C) the revised memory from Part C (see above).
  • Open your English Journal (Google Drive).
  • On  Top: Type the date (align left) and the title “Weekly Pages 3” (align center).
  • Paste (Command V) your memory (align left).
  • Make Sure your Doc is inside your English folder so Ms. McMillan can see your progress.
